Mom shamed me for reading a book about sex

My gf (18) bought me the book ahead of my 18th birthday. It was a joke on her part, but it turned into great reading material for me. I read it on a daily basis. Yesterday all that came to an end when my mom noticed the book in my room while I was at school. I didn't hide it. I didn't realize I had to. It's not like I was reading the Kama Sutra. Plus I'm almost an adult. I'm in a healthy relationship. I've always been responsible. But none of the above stopped my mother from getting rid of the book behind my back. She said it was inappropriate. I said it was neccessary. She called it porn. I called it education. My mom cried and left me feeling like the bad guy. Am I the bad guy though? I feel like my mom should've been proud of me.
